000: rules
[attr="class","staffbody"] [attr="class","staffheadimg"] premise[attr="class","staffpara"]Welcome to the world of "Salem"-- the name given to much of the known, civilised world, which comprises townships, villages, and sometimes sprawling cities that function autonomously, like states. Salem is a federation of human civilizations that find themselves miles apart, separated by thick outgrowths of wilderness and the daemons that spawn beyond the high-walled cities which keep them safe. Most of our roleplay takes place in Delphi, one of the largest autonomous city-states in Salem. [break][break]
"Witches" is a gender-neutral term referring to those humans who have a significant magical capacity—enough so that a familiar has manifested from their innate mana reservoirs and offered themselves as a companion for life. [break][break]
Everyone in Salem is capable of magic -- witches just have more of it. As such, they typically consider it their duty and prerogative to learn magic, and join a coven for this purpose at sixteen years of age. The witch-to-human ratio is usually 60-40 in major cities, and 20-80 in smaller villages or townships. [break][break] Most witches train to defend civilization against “daemons”—extremely dangerous wraith-like beings that look akin to animals and monsters with pitch black skin and red eyes. Daemons are perceived as highly aggressive and non-intelligent, though rare cases of intelligent daemons or ones capable of advanced magic have been documented. It is illegal to communicate with them.
general rules[attr="class","staffpara"] 001. Have respect for everyone and everything. This includes staff, members, guests, and even the rules and systems of the site. [break][break] 002. In agreement with the Proboards TOS, keep everything family-friendly. Fade to black before things get heated and keep swearing and the like to a minimum. Remember that mature content is not permitted by Proboards, even in private messages. [break][break] 003. Advertisements should be kept only on the plug board. Don't link to other sites in the public discord unless you're directing someone to a reference site.[break][break] 004. NO FACECLAIMS. Moonrise does not use faceclaims, but we require that your icon and hover are animanga in nature. This doesn't mean you need it to be fanart: it could just be an anime picture of a cup of coffee if you'd like. Whatever suits your character's aesthetic. This rule applies to icons used in posts as well. NOTE: AI art is not allowed on Moonrise under any circumstances. We may ask you to remove your art if it is AI. [break][break] 005. There is a six character cap on Moonrise at the moment. All characters must be at least 16 years of age, and must belong to one of the four covens: Hydra, Cerberus, Sybaris, or Pegasus. You may also make humans, though it’s not recommended as a first character.[break][break] 006. Discord! Joining the Moonrise Discord server is mandatory, as it is key to our moderation process. You are not expected to actively chat in the server, however, and can use it for administrative purposely only. You can access it here.

001: mastery
[attr="class","staffbody"] [attr="class","staffheadimg"] mastery points[attr="class","staffpara"]
Mastery points, or MP, is a point system on Moonrise that steadily accumulates and is suggestive of how powerful or skilled at magic your character has become. It also determines your character's rank. [break][break] 001. Members must keep track of their own MP through relevant links on their inventory. Staff will review these links when it's time to rank up, but otherwise, we're counting on you to keep things fair! [break][break] 002. Mastery points serve as a general guideline for character's power levels. While there may not be much of a difference between characters with 5 and 10 MP, for example, an initiate at 0 MP might find themselves outclassed by one at 19 MP. This is more of a suggestion than a rule. [break][break] 003. Mastery points will be deducted upon rank up.
ranks[attr="class","staffpara"] On Moonrise, ranks co-relate to the witch’s general level of authority and power within their coven. They are also usually directly proportional to the character’s magical strength, though there may be exceptions to that rule.[break][break] OVERVIEW [break][break] Initiate - All witches, unless preset, start here.[break][break] Novice - Requires 20 MP. [break][break] Sentinel - Requires 50 MP. At this rank, you gain a new domain. At this rank, you may start acquiring advanced spells.[break][break] Acolyte - Requires 100MP, and participation in a site-wide, injury-enabled event.* At this rank, you gain a special coven trinket, your NPC tie-ins (if any) are updated, and you are now allowed to ascend your familiar.[break][break] Champion - Requires 200MP and an IC test. At this rank, you gain a sobriquet or “title” for your character.[break][break] Master - IC only.[break][break] High Priest(ess) - IC only. [break][break] * includes CAD Takeover, The Afterparty, Novice Exchange Program, and The Calling Phase 2 [newclass=".blockalert"]background: var(--mainbg);color: var(--iconcolor); padding:1em; margin-bottom:1em; font-weight: bold; color: var(--hovericoncolor); text-transform: uppercase; } .blockalert::before { content: "!"; margin-right: 0.8em; color: var(--secondbg); background-color: var(--hovericoncolor); font-weight: bold; width: 25px; height: 25px; display: inline-block; text-align: center; font-size: 15px; border-radius: 50%;[/newclass]

002: obtaining gold and MP
[attr="class","staffbody"] [attr="class","staffheadimg"] earning gold and MP[attr="class","staffpara"] Gold and MP can be obtained through thread completion, mission completion, and various event rewards. In general, in-character posts earn 25 gold per post.. In addition, participating in site events and quests will reward extra gold and MP. [break][break] SOCIAL THREADS [break] Socials award a base of 3MP per thread, and 1MP per additional page. An additional page consists of at least four posts on the new page, i.e. at least two posts per character in a two-person thread. [break][break] Unless otherwise stated, such as for certain event-related socials, social threads that have less than five posts per character will award each character with 1MP instead. [break][break] MISSION THREADS [break] Missions award a base of 5MP per thread, and 1MP per additional page. An additional page consists of at least four posts on the new page, i.e. at least two posts per character in a two-person thread.[break][break] Mission threads also offer BONUS rewards of 3MP & 200 gold when completed within the designated event cycle timeframe. For example, a mission that is completed on time and spans two pages total will earn 9MP (5MP+1MP+3MP) and an additional 200 gold.[break][break] The above rewards apply only for the FIRST-TIME COMPLETION PER FACTION. Unless otherwise stated, if a character has completed a certain mission prompt twice, they will receive only SOCIAL rewards for their second thread. [break][break] Read more about missions here. [break][break] ARCHIVING THREADS [break] Threads can be archived before completion when a participant is deemed inactive, or all involved parties agree to archive it. The MP rewards for ARCHIVED threads are dependent on the number of posts within the thread. If a thread has less than 10 posts and each character has less than 5 posts, a maximum of 1MP is awarded. Otherwise, rewards will be awarded as per normal completion. 003: mastery - civilians
[attr="class","staffbody"] [attr="class","staffheadimg"] civilian characters[attr="class","staffpara"] Civilian characters are characters that, for whatever, reason, do not interact with the Mastery Point and rank system. These characters may be humans, or higher-leveled witches, known as "preset characters". It is not recommended to have a civilian as a first character on Moonrise. [break][break] 001. Civilians do not earn MP, and will not be allowed to participate in many site events, especially injury-enabled events. [break][break] 002. Human characters do not need to maintain an inventory, but may choose to do so. They cannot participate in missions or quests, either. [break][break] 003. Preset characters must still maintain an inventory and can buy spells, participate in missions, and some quests. [break][break] 004. Preset characters may be either sentinels or acolytes, and are typically expected to be older witches, designed to enable other member plots or engage with site lore. Acolyte presets must be at least 30 years old.[break][break] 005. Preset characters will require a timeline history at the time of application, and are subject to greater staff scrutiny and activity check requirements. Learn more in the APPLICATION thread. [break][break] 005. Only one Acolyte preset per member. [break][break] 006. Acolyte presets cannot ascend their familiars.[break][break] 007. The ranks of preset witches are marked with a [attr="class","fa-solid fa-crown"] icon on their profiles upon acceptance. a small note on humans[attr="class","staffpara"]
PLEASE UNDERSTAND that the site plot of Moonrise does not cater to non-witches. Staff is not and will not take the obligation of creating events specifically for human characters. Do not anticipate the focus or general themes of the site plot to change in this regard. Human characters are for rpers seeking a stricter focus on slice-of-life, and for exploring life inside a magical world without magic. Humans are also in beta, meaning we are still trialing this feature to see what roadblocks we might run into. Thank you for your patience!

004: magic: familiars & domains
[attr="class","staffbody"] [attr="class","staffheadimg"] a note about magic [attr="class","staffpara"]
Magic, in Moonrise, will be kept magical. It's a fickle form of energy, and the staff does not agree with keeping any sort of boundaries like stat systems or others on the site. All battles that do occur will be entirely freeform-- skills, spell descriptions, ranks, and anything else are simply guidelines or bases from which you can draw your own creative conclusions. One hard limit is that you only learn up to 60 spells total, of which 10 can be advanced spells, and 4 can be ultimate spells. That being said, to keep everything in line with the lore and plot of the site, the explanation of magic and familiars is such:
familiars [attr="class","staffpara"] [break][break] 01. Familiars are beings that exist in the mana realm. While many theories of their existence have been speculated, the commonly accepted and 'scientific' idea is that they are a conscious, cohesive collection of mana that has taken the form of a human-realm animal. They "manifest" this animal form when they want to, or when summoned by their witch. Learn more here (optional reading). [break][break] 02. Witches know their familiar's 'true name' and can thus give them any order they want. This is known as the witch's greatest secret. [break][break] 03. Pain and injuries sustained by the witch are felt by the familiar, and they have the ability to telepathically communicate. The familiar may also speak normally so others can hear them, but only while physically present in our realm. [break][break] 04. Familiars are highly intelligent and are constantly aware of the witch's surroundings, whether in the realm of existence or not. They have their own personalities and act often autonomously. [break][break] 04. The familiar needs to be physically manifested for a witch to execute any significant magical spell-- they are sort of the "gate" that stands between the witch and their internal reservoir of mana. [break][break] 05. Some witches have mythical familiars -- familiars that take the shape of magical or extinct creatures. These familiars grant their masters special 'boons.' Right now, you may buy up to one mythical familiar per player from the shop. domains [attr="class","staffpara"] To learn about the different types of magic available, please visit our Magic Compendium.

005: covens
[attr="class","staffbody"] [attr="class","staffheadimg"] what is a coven, anyway? [attr="class","staffpara"] What's a coven? [break][break] A coven is loosely defined as a group of witches who collectively study or practice magic, often to achieve a common goal or support an ideal. In the past, covens were generally smaller and often connected to a particular family or tribe, but as the world of witchcraft expanded, covens grew and began combining their strengths. They became less kinship-based and more institutionalized and, before anyone really realized it, they became an integral social, economic, and political aspect of witch society. In Delphi, four major covens exist: Sybaris, Pegasus, Cerberus, and Hydra. [break][break] Your character must be a part of the four major covens, or a human.
