somewhere between then and now, maddox realises the key difference between the way he's heard the stories that have led him to this day, from the house in eclipse, to the flickering firelight of the forge, to bar by the docks, hiding in plain sight.[break][break]
every story aeris tells him is something hungry and bleeding. the man himself stands in the centre of it, the craftsman's signature shaping every word like the angle of a chisel. when he tells a story, it's only ever a disguise for a command, as gentle as it may be. a story about the stars turns into a recount of fallen ancestors turns into a lesson, turns into pick up the knife, maddox, don't let your hands shake. it's a little too close to home every time, which is only natural, that the father writes a song for the lyre that he made, but therein lies the heart of the story: that he knows it because it is his own, even before it happens.[break][break]
when zeke spins a story, it's more difficult to see the shape of the storyteller. the story doesn't bleed, not at first; the words are doing all the work, reframed carefully in the mouth of a wound. maddox likes to think he's gotten a bit better with it over time, but trying to actually figure out what zeke is saying is a little bit like staring at a canvas: focus too hard on the brushstrokes, and you'll forget what you were looking at. notice the detail, don't get too caught up in it.[break][break]
maybe when zeke tells it, a story is just a story. zeke's probably right. maybe the threads are too loosely connected to make any sort of meaningful sense. maybe the enemy is just the enemy and nothing more.[break][break]

Ascendency is a tougher one -- it's the realm of legends, for sure, and he's certain that Maddox has grown up on stories of magic enough to have heard of it. Few witches will ever see their familiars transform, and even Ezekiel has yet to witness an ascendancy in the flesh. But it's certainly real, as far as legends go. There are witches like Jeremiah to prove it, after all.
