a nondescript storefront lost in the canals, its twin in eclipse town, the apothecary sees marked foot traffic nonetheless. it has an established reputation within its side of delphi, known both for the potency of its concoctions and wide catalogue of ingredients, trinkets, and relevant scrolls. the broken vial has been in the possession of the iakovou family for generations, long before even iro’s grandfather was born. known for their talented alchemists and potioneers, the family name comes with a particular set of expectations. [break][break]
iro iakovou, the current shopkeeper, presides over the bulk of the shop’s general maintenance and alchemical selection. her granddaughter, mirto vasili, primarily concerns herself with procuring the herbs and ingredients the shop offers. those that ask the right questions will find she further peddles ancient, rare, or specialized texts, with a proclivity for those covering magical history, theory, and curse breaking. she is sought after for her willingness to fulfill special requests.[break][break]
beyond their public standing, with the iakovou family having a long-standing involvement with hydra, the apothecary has historically functioned as a sort of safehouse; its backroom doubles as a medical ward, offering aid to those who know to seek it. [break]

both apothecaries are heavily warded, protected by an intricate web of defensive runes, weaved over the course of twenty years; a significant portion of iro’s mana rests in their hearts to sustain itself. why, against who or what, is known only to iro herself.

despite her talent in the domain, iro didn’t pursue alchemy until rather late in her life, especially when compared to most of her family; in her youth she was an abjuration specialist with a hunger for knowledge. particularly interested in runic arrays and wards, she devoured anything she could get her hands on: only when her sister died, her mother already gone, did she shift her focus and carried on the family legacy, as her ancestors did for her.

the order of the broken veil has a long and storied history, known by few, restricted to its own circles. the exact date of its inception is lost to time, though irrefutable facts remain.[break][break]

founded by five families, the order follows the faith of Kharyism, devoted to a daemon god known as Kharyis, The Hooded One. guided by their absolute, pious creed, they believe they must rupture the earth and unleash her hellish beasts in order to guarantee the world’s salvation. [break][break]

observed order activity involves sacrificial rituals and religious rites, as well as frequent expeditions in search of remnants of their supposed god. they refer to these remnants as echoes, though the credibility of such “relics” is questionable at best.

members can be identified by thin, crimson burns wrapping around their wrists; their initiation process remains unknown to those outside of its ranks. all that is certain is that those who conspire against the order are marked for death and hunted. ~~defectors lose their hands~~.

the bulk of its followers are referred to simply as the devoted with no further identifying titles, while those with the most influence are called ecclesiasts. each ecclesiast has control over their own sects, with there being five distinct sects at all times. historically, these representatives have been descended from the founding families, and thus named as such: the MADRAS sect, the KARALIS sect, the ZAIMIS sect, the SAITTA sect, and the LOIZOU sect.

these sects often convene, effectively forming a stable council to preside over the order’s activities and affairs. these gatherings, when they occur, are referred to as a SANCTUS; any ecclesiast can call for a sanctus to take place, though a majority must agree to the summit.[break][break]

pity sits on the back of her neck;
begs those plum-dyed eyes to find the door,
the one that knows how to throw silence into the wall,
the one that is calling her name from another’s mouth.

the one right behind her.

[ an unassuming thing, oak-aged and unyielding,
blood scattered over its handle;
through a crack in the frame you can see:
blades and catgut, horsehair and fiddle strings,
that which was used to make brokenness revert.

there is the edge of a bedframe, two bottles of whiskey, cloth rags, gauze, an assortment of knives and saws. the stench, as far as it was, still stung the nose— that door rarely closed. ][break]
there was no magic there.
just death or where it’s soon to be;
a mourning, constant, tracing footsteps that fell asleep.

mirto didn’t like the back room. didn’t like the sounds it would make when nothing else could fix it.[break]
her books never held a voice like they did.
