[attr="class","chartl-item"]2012 he refuses to return home empty-handed. he's a friendly sort — silvertongued, persuasive, smart. he isn't fussy about the sort of jobs that come his way. he'll run errands, write someone else's essays, pore over reports in the dead of night. he starts working for sybaris — for dmitri wisbane — and he learns that he can do a coffee run at eight and dispose of a body at nine and be back in time to take everyone's lunch orders by twelve, all clean and smiling. serafim goes where there is money to be made; he goes only where he is wanted.

a large mansion owned by one selwyn hale. with a sprawling field at one end and a path to the open ocean on another, the manor is the perfect hiding spot for someone who is not too fond of the bustle of the village community. its reclusive inhabitant is seldom seen, though that is hardly far from unusual. in truth, it has been the residence of serafim strix for the past two years. he vastly prefers this over the tiny room he once rented at the back of the theatre — enough space for him to stretch his legs, and ample opportunity for him to test out his newfound magical skills away from prying eyes.

the polaris

the polaris — a smaller ship commissioned by selwyn hale, though regrettably the man himself was never able to take her out to sea himself. custom built for speed and durability, the polaris was made specifically for the task of hunting down daemons that selwyn had previously tried, and failed, to bring down. [break][break]

serafim has few qualms about 'inheriting' ship and dream both. it serves him well, after all, and he can only hope that he's a fair shot better than selwyn at keeping his crew alive.

the reclusive captain of the lucia, now marooned at the bottom of the deep blue sea. it's a secret of sorts that selwyn hale has been replaced by serafim strix for almost two years by now — but dead men tell no tales, right?[break][break]

a former sybaris witch who spent more time outside of delphi's walls than within in, some may have called selwyn hale more of a pirate than a privateer. powerful enough to make something of himself in delphi if he was so inclined, but averse to attention, selwyn chased the ideal of a grand hunt like a hound scenting a fox. his expeditions were reckless, often in the company of sailors less than adequately trained, but they reaped grand rewards... when successful.[break][break]

selwyn's rashness — which often came at the cost of others — as well as his disinclination for social niceties meant that his friends were few and far between. most of this category naturally encompassed whoever was both foolhardy enough to continue sailing with him and hardy enough to survive the ordeal. every moment on land is a moment spent shirking his actual duties and planning another hunt, even if he'd wrecked his second boat in the month and is left only with a mildly leaky fishing vessel.[break][break]

he's different, after losing the lucia. not that many notice — he's just another face in the port, after all. there's something sharper about whatever returned from sea, less controlled. something dangerous.[break][break]

on the surface: a small, sleepy village on the edge of the west salem sea. a fog often clings to its shores with a vengeance; many a ship has been wrecked on the rocky shores below its lighthouse. the village seems to be an odd assortment of buildings and characters, as though cobbled together by two separate hands. in a way, it has.[break][break]

the treacherous seas around aelmor house no shortage of strange sea daemons, enough that some parts of the town close to the sea bear the reputation of haunted. houses abandoned by sailors lost to sea stand empty even years after the loss. it is bad luck to move into the home of someone who died at sea without first rebuilding it — the houses remember only their old masters, and strangers are but new food for the waters.[break][break]

on the other hand, aelmor's mildly ominous reputation means that visitors are few and far between, making it the perfect cover for less-than-lawful nautical activities. which is to say: aelmor's seen its fair share of pirates passing by. something insidious lives beneath the docks of the little fishing village, only wrangled into something resembling order by virtue of an illusionist who knows the value of fear and shadows.[break][break]

do not conflate selwyn hale for any semblance of justice, though. when he strings up a crew of pirates by their feet on a fishing line between the piers, he's only collecting a bounty. when a notoriously tight-lipped informant spills their secrets seemingly of their own volition, selwyn's not looking at the exposure of corruption but because he's annoyed that one of his trade routes was delayed. [break][break]

aelmor's stories are always of monsters. sometimes, they are daemons. sometimes, they are only human.

there is a little orphanage on the outskirts of aelmor, tucked away on the southernmost side along the coast. [break][break]

until its land was partly destroyed during a storm in 2008, it was run by its original founder, lady sutherland, who hailed from a minor noble house that fell into disrepute over some poorly-invested trade deals. how lady sutherland maintained the orphanage for that long seemed a mystery to most — she had no staff nor no apparent benefactors, though the children were known for their helpfulness and charm around the city. [break][break]

the orphans of the white orchid were a common sight along the docks, trailing behind lady sutherland selling little homemade trinkets, offering to run errands or pass along messages, or even putting up little performances at the small local theatre. one in particular, a young sanya, was known for their talent at dancing, often accompanying lady sutherland when entertaining visiting guests.[break][break]

the orphanage remained in disrepair for quite some time after its destruction, and while occasional donations trickled in, the coffers were simply too empty to rebuild entirely, and even those well-intentioned could admit that trying to keep the place afloat was a doomed affair.[break][break]

white orchid orphanage was successfully rebuilt in 2016, following the generous donations of an anonymous benefactor. it is currently run by devyn marion.[break][break]

serafim visits as much as he can. he brings gifts, sometimes; others, he arrives with a troubled look in his eye and asks for names in return.[break][break]

it's odd, if you're trying to track him on paper — there is no record of a serafim strix. but he seems to know the hallways like the back of his hand, and marion opens the door willingly and greets him warmly every time.[break][break]

you're back, a child chirps, and tugs on his sleeve to ask him to lean closer. i went to the docks today, they always say, wanna know what i heard?

the white orchid

an elusive spy ring based in the vale and surrounding areas, historically tied to the caelestrix family. often takes in children who do not suit the desired caelestrix image and trains them accordingly, or otherwise ensures that the family name is not tainted. often associated with the leisure activities of high society and artistic endeavours: think ballet, opera, theatre, so on and so forth. after its aelmor branch was compromised in 2008, it was rebuilt closer to the vale. its current activities are unknown.

[attr="class","minornpccont"]next to photographs, it doesn't take too much of a discerning eye to ascertain serafim's parentage. he takes care to hide it, as he is taught, but some things bleed through when he isn't careful. he inherits his father's proud posture, calculating gaze, and capricious temperament; it is his mother that gives him his dark hair, elegant features that always dance dangerously close to too sharp, and perhaps above all, her hunger for a game.[break][break]

the kicker, however, is the colour of his eyes: ocean eyes, ulla would say with a wry smile, two shades a little too far for them to want you.

upon closer inspection, the white orchid's dossier on the former operative known as LAELIA is woefully short.[break][break]

LAELIA. a genus of orchids that thrive during winter.

like all of ulla's records, it details the operative's history with the ring in great detail: SANYA CAELESTRIX was personally given over to ulla sutherland at the age of nine, as is customary for the caelestrix family. they then completed the requisite training over the course of the next nine years, displaying notable talent in MARKSMANSHIP.[break][break]

LAELIA's longest standing assignment was recorded with the CALANTHE BALLET COMPANY of the VALE.[break][break]

from there, it's all downhill. the dossier does not skim over deficiencies — a folded insert marks each necessary CORRECTION like a tally, with reasons neatly noted beside them. discipline, deviated from set assignment; discipline, insubordination; discipline, failed to comply with chain of command. then, the kicker: a distinct lack of magical talent, despite being subject to countless tests.[break][break]

alas, each correction is matched by a successful mission, a valuable tidbit of information gleaned. perhaps this is one of ulla sutherland's few regrets: a promising prodigy lost, not because of clever machinations or wayward desires, but simply an inauspicious coincidence that set into motion a creature built to chase storms.[break][break]

the details of LAELIA's disappearance mark the end of the dossier, and are as follows:[break][break]

on 21 DECEMBER 2012, a storm hits AELMOR. due to the proximity of the building to the sea, an UNIDENTIFIABLE object washes up on the shore nearby, and appears to trigger an EPISODE of uncontrollable magic. the subsequent attempt to suppress LAELIA fails, and results in the integrity of the AELMOR branch being compromised, as well as the loss of instructing operative ZEUXINE. [attr="class","devnotesscroll"] a very directionless little bastard -- aka what happens when you try to prime a spy for high society infiltration and assassination only to press a little too hard and for something to snap, turning him loose and slightly insane. tends to be driven by avoidance -- fleeing from the white orchid fearing their anger, wariness of the sea after selwyn's death, reluctance to build his own reputation and relying on covers instead to avoid 'settling' on a single identity -- which tend to be solved when presented with hunger and directives. fears losing control and autonomy, which makes him wary of whatever 'madness' some of the hunters seem to eventually suffer from, and reluctant to return to the white orchid as he perceives them to continually be tied to the caelestrixes. dislikes being used. ironically very likely to be the type of person framed for something dramatic and then will somehow find a way to work with that. probably needs to be cornered to face whatever he's trying to avoid. likely moving towards an endgame where he becomes something more similar to ulla, i.e. a feral spymaster who is less puppeeter and more of a wildcard player of a game.

[attr="class","tscroll"]less of the butterfly effect, more of a nebulous event horizon, something like the hungry, all-consuming sea. we start at the shoreline: a daemon corpse washes up on a black sand beach. further out at sea, a rupture opens like a wound in the water, and the skies above roil into a storm. futher inland, something young and ravenous is waking up.[break][break]

a rupture-touched daemon corpse washes up on shore. a young witch witnesses their familiar in a mindless frenzy. fear — instinctive, still human — locks the memory away. they will not remember this. [break][break]

the lead operative in charge of aelmor's operations, zeuxine, is killed. [break][break]

with the integrity of the aelmor operation compromised, the white orchid abandons their branch there and retreats to the vale. the order that they have inadvertently brought to the area goes with them, like something parasitic that grows roots. there are fights over a power vacuum, each mouth greedy for its pound of flesh.[break][break]

a delphian witch named selwyn hale sails into aelmor a week later.

2012, age 18.

[attr="class","tscroll"]the monarchy of the vale collapses. while some operatives of the white orchid remain in the vicinity to support the fleeing nobility, most are scattered across salem.[break][break]

SERAFIM STRIX moves to delphi in search of work, and begins working for dmitri wisbane as an intern. during pockets of free time, he plies his trade as an actor in small theatre productions.

2016, age 22.

serafim returns to aelmor, and joins the crew of the lucia. some skills that he's picked up along the way are transferable: marksmanship, or being able to take a hit. some are less so, because the the quarry selwyn hale pursues — daemons, monsters, or anything with an interesting bounty on its head — are seldom amenable to a chat. he learns to keep up quickly.[break][break]

by the end of the year, serafim strix has taken over duties as the ship's navigator, and developed an uncanny sense of where dangerous waters lie.[break][break]

by the end of the year, selwyn hale has learned two things. one: sell a boy a dream, and he'll tell you anything. two: the boy is a witch, and his familiar is named ɐx—ˆi—[break][break]

the familiar is a monster.

2020, age 26.

'selwyn hale' is elusive as ever, capricious in his involvement with aelmor, dangerous in his definitions of order. if the look in his eyes is a little wilder, if he seems almost to talk to himself, well, what's not to be expected? nothing enters the abyss and leaves untouched.

2021, age 27.
