So you wilt into the piles of books you’ve surrounded yourself with and accept that these are your friends. [break][break] No matter what happens Ma and Pa would have been there for you. You know they would’ve been. So you cling to your memories of them and you live in your head. You imagine how Ma would hold you tight while you cry out every bit of pain that’s built up over the years. You imagine how Pa would try to lift your spirits with a bowl of sweets. You know, no matter what Aunty says, that your parents would be like the ones in the books you read. [break][break] Life is better this way. [break][break] Until you meet Her. She is exciting and free – and she’ll talk to you about any of the books, characters, or adventures you have buzzing through your head. Eventually she talks you into going on your own adventures. Sometimes you’re running through the woods. Sometimes you’re building a town of paper dolls. But you’re always together. Aunty’s looming, critical gaze doesn’t phase her. You don’t know if she even notices. [break][break] . . . a d o l e s c e n c e [break][break] You stop because you hear a laugh – Her laugh. The same laugh she gives when she teases you in the sweetest of ways. It’s soft and intimate and you almost blush hearing it when it isn’t meant for you. You know better than to gently nudge open the class room door but you do it anyway. You see exactly what you knew you would and it hurts more than you ever thought. She’s looking at a third year boy with so much more desire than she’s ever had when she looks at you. The two kiss – the same way you and her kiss in secret. And yet, it’s different. [break][break] Your heart crumples. Your mind is racing and that little lump of a heart is too. You could scream; you could cry; you could burst through the door and curse them both. Tears sting your eyes as you linger on the thought. [break][break] You turn and slip away instead. [break][break] You have Harris now and you tell yourself that a familiar is all a witch really needs. They’ll listen to you go on about your books. [break][break] . . . a d u l t h o o d [break][break] You find a little apartment over a small food shop. Aunty disapproves but it's yours and she can’t keep you from it. You pack it full of books and, in the time between your books and work, you watch the kids play between the old furniture and trash in the alley way that your kitchen window faces.
