It's you, grasping the rail of your playpen and rocking back with all your weight as you continue calling in the only way you know how. You don’t know how long it’s been but your eyes are puffy from all the tears and your little voice is cracking. Doesn’t Ma hear you? [break][break]
Your diaper sags around your waist – the wings strained against the weight of a day’s worth of ‘business’. Your little feet stomp. You cry so long that your voice is hoarse. You pull against the playpen. The dull hum of the T.V. fragments your bouts until you give up entirely; and then the sharp glow and disturbingly happy voices keep you company as you drink air from an empty bottle.[break][break]
Time isn’t something you understand yet. You don’t know that Ma disappeared into the back room hours ago. You need her though. Can't she hear you?[break][break]
Eventually Ma stumbles back to you. She tucks a little silver trinket away next to her chair then she finally turns to you. You’re feverish for her attention. You need so much that you don’t know what you need anymore. She reaches for you and you’re already pulling yourself up her arms – she’s not putting you down. She says something. Her words are slurred but you wouldn’t know the difference. You can’t hold back your whimpers as she fumbles towards the kitchen with you in tow.[break][break]
How many days of your life are spent desperately calling for Ma or Pa? How long will it be this time or the next? The days are misery on repeat. But then Aunty shows up. One glance at you and she’s tearing through the house. Ma rushes out of the back room but it’s too late: Aunty’s found her silver trinket – or one of them. She screams at Ma. They scream at each other. Then you scream at them.[break][break]
Aunty’s pause is brief but Ma rushes to block you. It’s useless. Ma’s easily brushed aside in her uncoordinated stupor. Aunty tosses the silver trinket to the floor, bowls through Ma, and whisks you out of the playpen. There’s still so much screaming. Everyone is screaming. But Aunty’s grasp is firm as she carries you away.[break][break]
It won't be long before you forget and all you’ll know is Aunty’s strict, steely gaze. You’ll start to escape her home with day dreams of all the amazing, fun things you know you’d get to do if Ma and Pa were still here.
