With the three of you working, making it between paychecks isn’t as hard but, still, you wish you had enough to get the newest clothes, or broomsticks, or whatever other gadgets your friends always seemed to have.[break][break] The closer you are to adulthood the more you notice your friends moving towards greater heights - planning for college or talking about careers. Sure, some are like you, with no idea how to really chase a dream like that because there are so many reasons why you can’t. But the handful that are like you doesn’t distract you from all the others that aren’t.[break][break] You slowly withdraw from your more successful friends - whether its’ because of shame or jealousy, you really can’t tell. But someone convinces you to visit for a party. Just this one time, they tell you, come have a good time. Your curiosity gets the best of you. You’ve never been on a college campus before but it seemed like so much fun.[break][break] You meet a boy that night. He’s a charmer and convinces you, through so many romantic gestures that followed that night, to give him a chance. You two are inseparable and when he talks about how you could go to school too, you almost start to believe him. [break][break] You end up pregnant and he comforts you through your fear. He says everything is going to be alright. He says he’s going to take care of his family no matter what – and this baby is his family. You miss the part where he didn't include you. Within months of giving birth, he leaves with the baby and makes the distinction clear: you are not his family. [break][break] In fact, you couldn’t be further from it. His family is wealthy and strong. Yours is poor and, in his world, severely lacking. Your pleas fall on deaf ears and you’re left with a threat: leave him and his daughter alone or else. [break][break] Mama and Papa try to comfort you but they are mourning the loss too. You have each other, you think, but life’s funny. It takes them from you too. You’re missing every piece of yourself and your anger rises to fill the void. You will not be powerless and if the world is going to treat you as if you are, then you will correct the mistake. [break][break] You learn more about opportunity and all the different kinds that the world has to offer. You find a different kind of family and, with it, you find power and purpose. [break][break] Eventually, you enroll in university so you can help bolster the family’s good name. You will make them proud in any way that you can.
