being told this was both the greatest and worst day of your life. childhood died with those few words uttered to you, and you hadn't noticed until years later. if you had known, now that you have hindsight of your actions, of the actions of others, you think you would have done something differently — but what? no one told you that this gift you didn't ask for would come with a lofty price. maybe you could have changed what fate had in store for you.[break][break]

so what was this gift?[break][break]

some say you can read the future, see the lives of those curious play out in cards, in the remnants of tea leaves, in the cracks and curves of palms held gently in your own. you can't help but see the signs, how they align in the stars — moonbeams dance around your head when you slumber, your dreams are chaos, and you often wake with a stammering heart, but nothing is promised. what you see is a possibility within a million possibilities, and not knowing what is to come is terrifying.

your hands have been bloodied before. looking back on it now, you feel incredibly queasy. different nightmares plague you now, ones of a sea of red that stretches for eternity, the waters numbingly cold, but compared to the sort you were having before, you prefer these. how many innocent lives have you ended with your own hands, with your sharp, silvered tongue, with your deception? you thought you were doing something good, something worthwhile, and for a moment, you felt fulfilled with the purpose gracefully bestowed upon you.[break][break]

you are terrified of the woods. you are terrified of glory. you think, if this is what you had to do to get there, what would glory itself entail?[break][break]

the heart is rended; you flee the visions of winter and its silence. you realize this is not home, not what a home should be. there is a trembling in the air, and disappointment is cast upon you and you're stripped of your name. you decide to craft one yourself as you slink away, exiled for a dream you didn't believe in.[break][break]
