Once a village of fishermen, oyster farmers, and market gardeners, Kaer-Maen has grown and changed over the centuries under the influence of noble local families. To protect the inhabitants from pirates and ruthless extortion, they gathered together and financed the construction of the wall surrounding what had become a thriving medium-sized city.
