[nospaces] [attr="class","chartl"] [attr="class","chartltitle"]pt i | the islands [attr="class","chartl-item"]3 days before the 3rd new moon of the rainy season An infant is born with shocking blue eyes. They are situated somewhere warm and humid, surrounded by vivid greenery and salt-ladened winds. [break][break] [Mitra couldn't tell you the name of their birthplace or many details about their blood parents, but have been searching through archives for old trade routes to islands south of the Vale.] [attr="class","chartl-item"]24 cycles later The once-infant, now-toddler is given the name "Mitra". Although most of the village helps raise them in one way or another, an elderly couple had already taken on the role of parents. [attr="class","chartl-item"]and over 40 cycles after that the couple dies, one passing barely a lunar cycle after the other. The village felt strangely hollow after that. Constrained, somehow, in a way that the child didn't know how to explain. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2006, August Sailors from the mainland come to the archipelago to trade. It was a rare and still-dwindling occurrence. Regardless, there was plenty of food for them now that Mitra was the only one who ate anything. [break][break] ... Wait, that wasn't right... was it..? [break][break] And what was that conversation with the god-tongue... [break][break] [There are so many things they remember that Mitra is sure shouldn't be true, but it's so difficult to discern truth through the remembered lens of a child.] [break][break] However it happened, Mitra was sent away on that ship, and, after a many-day voyage of hopping between faraway islands, found themselves at the largest island they'd ever seen. The place that the sailors called the "Vale" looked like it stretched on forever. [break] [attr="class","chartl"] [attr="class","chartltitle"]pt ii | the vale, the orphanage [attr="class","chartl-item"]2007, July The merchants set sail one day, as they often did -- but this time, they don't come home. The sailors' family members who cared for Mitra in the interim had not signed up for a permanent child, and so Mitra was eventually placed in an orphanage. [break][break] "Boy?" asks the receptionist as she goes down the entry paperwork. [break][break] "Māhū," they correct. [break][break] She gives them a blank look before writing down an "M" -- this wasn't the type of place where it would really matter. Mitra had been learning letters recently, and at the time thought it was correct. [break][break] (Later, they think it was out of mercy. They see how some of the adults shop around for girls.) [attr="class","chartl-item"]2008 A couple takes them in. Just a few months later, they're returned. Later in the year, a near-identical rotation happens with a different pair. [break][break] Mitra makes themselves less agreeable after that. [nospaces] [attr="class","loccont"] [attr="class","loctitle"] The Van Laar Family [attr="class","locbody"]
The Van Laars are a lesser noble family scattered between Delphi and the Vale, widely respected for their influence over resource-rich swaths of inland wilderness, but rarely met with unconditional trust. They began as an unremarkable clan of nomadic hunters and mercenaries some centuries ago, eventually taking the initiative of claiming remote towns by force. [break][break] Their reputation as conquerors lessened following the Great War as they rested on the income from mines and logging operations, but it never left them entirely. They remain esteemed hunters and martial duelists, though now more for reputation and glory than necessity.
