The debtors keep coming. They take fancy dresses for silk, they take the hardwood furniture, the goblets - they take everything. After they take everything, they start threatening to take her sisters. [attr="class","chartl-item"]The casino looms over, and Katerina gets all the money that she can from odd jobs. And then she enters the casino, sneaking in through one of the back entrances. She isn’t old enough to gamble, but her older sister does her makeup to make her look older. [attr="class","chartl-item"]She wins, and wins, and wins. It’s fun, she loves it - the thrill of winning and losing. She catches the attention of the management. There’s a woman watching her that must not be that much older than Katerina. She watches as Kat bets everything on a single hand of cards - her father’s debts, her own debts, her winnings; all on a single hand of cards. [attr="class","chartl-item"]Katerina’s entire world breaks over a single hand of cards. So she begs the woman watching her for another chance, at anything. So, Viveca Vice offers Katerina a choice to do something that’ll save her family from their debts forever. All she has to do is become an angel. [attr="class","chartl-item"]She sees her sister once again, to tell them that’ll be okay. [attr="class","chartl-item"]Mano Della Morte, dead man’s hand, two black aces, two black eights. Or, as Katerina would come to know it - a group of assassins that operated as the hand of death. She leaves hawk feathers on rooftops, she learns how to shoot and duel, she learns how to cheat, lie, steal - anything that she needs. She learns how to become nothing. They are good at being nothing at all. [attr="class","chartl-item"]Eventually, she is freed from her debts, but she stays. The Hand of Death gave her life back, a life she could not have imagined. Eventually, she buys back the rubies and diamonds that were sold by her father that belonged to her mother and has them made into jewelry of her own. [attr="class","chartl-item"]When her saviour goes to Delphi to set up operations there, Katerina follows like a loyal hound. There is more than a single finger on death’s hand after all. In order to expand, falcons become snakes instead. It’s just changing one badge or another in Kat’s mind - she knows her true loyalty.
