[attr="class","chartl-item"]2007 he is five years old, and wields a dagger in defence of his siblings for the first time. there is a stirring in his blood, a fire in his bones; five years old is obscenely early for a familiar to manifest, but kirjava is as protective as himself. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2008 he is seven. his mother returns, late one night. his father is not by her side. he sees her eyes and knows, soul-deep, that this is the last time he will see her again. he is right [attr="class","chartl-item"]2009 he is eight. he has no home, he and his two little siblings. he tries so very hard to look after them the way they deserve, but he is a child, still. he is not enough. their clothes grow threadbare, their cheeks grow hollow, their eyes tired, their bones brittle. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2010 he is nine. winter arrives on silent feet, gathers his brother in her arms, and leaves. saskia is so small, so still, so quiet. he cannot lose her too. a deal is proposed: his servitude, for her safety. of course he accepts. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2013 he is twelve. he bloodies his hands with lifeblood, condemns his soul for darkness. under his master's experienced hands, he is shaped in a tool, a blade, a weapon. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2016 he is fifteen, and rebellion stirs like fire fanned with wind. under the cover of darkness, small things begin to go awry for the mafia. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2018 he is seventeen. a string of mafia warehouses have been set ablaze. the underworld is up in uproar. he runs in the night with that same tempest-eyed boy, now grown into his ferocity and strength. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2019 he is eighteen, he is reckless, he is too, too foolish. his master catches him and brings him to heel. what use is a weapon if it is not properly broken? he does not see the sky for three whole years. [nospaces] [attr="class","questcont"] [attr="class","questname"]the triple crowned ravens [attr="class","queststats"] [attr="class","questtalk"] if you wish upon a raven, you must understand; that if you wish upon a raven, a raven you become[break] [attr="class","questh"]FOLKLORE [break] [attr="class","questblock"]
'beware,' they whisper at the flurry of raven wings, three birds perched atop a tree. 'beware, the three-eyed raven a-watches.'[break][break]
'beware,' they whisper at the throaty sound of a raven's call, three shadows swooping across the sky. 'beware, the three-winged raven is aflight.'[break][break]
'beware,' they whisper to their children's ears, a lesson taught before there may be three knocks on the door. 'beware of cruelty, beware of dishonour. the three-legged raven is a-waiting.' [break] the triple crowned raven spirit is most often depicted as a trio of ravens: one with three eyes, one with three wings, and one with three legs — each with a golden crown atop their head. these three ravens are said to represent different attributes the spirit seeks, or different aspects of what it represents. in rare instances, it can be depicted as one entity, crowned in eyes and wreathed in shadow. seeing three ravens together is considered to be a symbol of their presence.[break][break] texts vary on whether it is considered a spirit or a minor god; stories call them guardians. oral tradition say that they are the eyes and ears of the land itself, reflecting the hearts and fears of the humans who call to them. with the old stories dying out, the triple crowned raven is not well-known among summoners today and even less so among pages or priests. few worship it directly, though some still leave out offerings.[break][break] the correct offering is a stick of ink, a ribbon of red, and a golden coin.[break][break] [attr="class","questh"]THE THREE RAVENS [break] the three-eyed raven spirit sees all it sets to see, of past and present and future. one eye is is for insight, golden as the midday sun; one eye is for prophecy, silver as the moon; the centre eye is solid black and sees justice and injustice both, balanced before it for judgement. it hungers for knowledge, it seeks to learn — offer to it ink or song or story or word, and speak no untruth or it may take the truth from you.[break][break] the three-winged raven spirit has traversed all the lands, in this realm and all those beyond. its wings are patterned with constellations from foreign skies, its feathers made of shadow and mist. it guides lost souls to their rest and broken souls to seek peace, travellers to where their hearts most desire, weary feet to their journey's end. follow its trail and you will end up where you need to be. offer to it white flowers, sprigs of heather, or ribbons of red — and be respectful but wary of its calls to follow, lest you find yourself far from home.[break][break] the three-legged raven spirit takes from the unworthy, and targets the unjust. it delivers judgement, it delivers woe — its beak is tinted red with blood, and claws are dipped in crimson. in one foot it holds a sword of steel, in another it holds a heart. the third foot grips a golden coin from which it may divine innocence from evil, honour from oathbreak, nobility from guilt. it despises greed and laughs in the face of ego; it judges cruelty and will pay it back in equal measure. offer to it a golden coin, and endeavour to never catch its notice.[break][break] [attr="class","questh"]THE SHRINE [break] shrines to the triple crowned raven are rarely large; they seek not wealth nor grandiosity nor attention. a humble structure of wood and rope, enough for a shelter but open to the elements — tradition is to hang a bundle of raven feathers and a lantern by the door, carve eyes into the walls, and place a golden coin on the alter. tradition says that the shrine should stray away from established paths, should be surrounded by trees and stone and be beneath open sky. [break][break] some say that the raven spirits need no shrine at all — simply offering beneath the wind and skies is enough to guide them to you. [nospaces] [attr="class","questcont"] [attr="class","questname"]to know thyself [attr="class","queststats"] [attr="class","questh"] Ø. beginning [break] It begins with a story. [break][break] Once upon a time, in the First Beginnings of the world, there was no sky. There was land with fertile ground to sow, and rivers with clear waters to drink, and prey with soft fur to hunt, and the Endless Ocean separating the mortal realm from the divine above. The people who lived here were happy, for they knew only abundance and nothing of danger. Among these people were two brothers, Polaris and Sirius, and they, too, were happy. [break][break]
And then came the Great Darkness. It came suddenly and without warning, stealing over the land in a heavy, impenetrable gloom. It withered the crops and polluted the waters. It cracked the ground and turned soil to black tar. It infected the hearts and souls of people, twisting them into mad, corrupted monsters. It was the First Calamity upon the world, to which there was no defence. [break][break]
The people scattered. They ran. From mountain to mountain, from plain to plain, from forest to forest, they fled in search of the safety and shelter they had known before. But the Great Darkness was everywhere. It was endless. It was inescapable. [break][break]
Sirius could not bear to see the people so defenceless. He took his hunter’s spear and forged it into something heavy and solid and it became the First Sword. “Let this sword be the instrument of my determination,” he declared, and taught the people how to fight.[break][break]
Polaris could not bear to see the people so vulnerable. He took his harvest pan and forged it into something round and sturdy and it became the First Shield. “Let this shield be the instrument of my will,” he declared, and taught the people how to protect. [break][break]
But it was not enough. The Great Darkness was eternal and spread decay wherever it touched. [break][break]
“I will sail to the Realm of Gods,” said Sirius one day, “and I will beg for aid.” The Realm of Gods lay across the Endless Ocean and was forbidden to mortals on pain of death, but he could not watch even one more person die. He was determined to make the journey even if it would cost him his life. [break][break]
Polaris was sorrowful at the sacrifice his brother would be making, but he, too, knew the weight of duty. “I will build you a ship capable of a million journeys and bless it with my love,” he said, and made the ship beautiful and swift with silverwood planks and sails as white as snow, and it glowed with the light of his love. “Go. I will stay and guard our people, and I will keep you in my heart.”[break][break]
And so Sirius set sail across the Endless Ocean, and Polaris watched as the white ship ascended high above the world. The journey was merciless for the Endless Ocean sought to bar all mortals from the land of the divine, but Sirius was determined and his heart was pure, and so eventually he arrived at the Realm of Gods. [break][break]
“Who dares step foot upon this sacred land?” said the gods upon seeing him, ready to strike him down. And Sirius relayed the coming of the Great Darkness and pled the case of the people. [break][break]
The gods were moved by his unselfish plea and smote the Great Darkness into a million tiny pieces. These pieces were weaker and far more fragile and were able to be killed by mortals. They became the First Daemons of the world and even to this day the remnants seek to reunite into one primordial entity. [break][break]
But the gods were not done. They created the sun to ensure the Great Darkness could never be absolute again, and turned the Endless Ocean into the sky where lost souls could be laid to rest, safe from all corruption. Those souls became the First Stars, added to with every death.[break][break]
And to Sirius, the gods gave the gift of Divine Light so that he could fight against the darkness with ease, but for the crime of setting foot upon the Realm of Gods, he was barred from returning home or resting until the last daemon had been vanquished. He became the brightest star in the night sky, and his ship became the moon. [break][break]
When Polaris heard of this edict, he was deeply grieved. He vowed to wait for his brother’s return no matter how long it took, for their home was each other and there would be no respite apart. [break][break]
The gods witnessed his grief and were moved at the depths of his devotion. They turned him into a star, too, so that he could watch over his people as he faithfully awaited the day he could be reunited with his brother. [break][break]
To this day, Sirius traverses the sky searching for daemons to smite, and shares his strength with those fate-touched on earth to aid him in his eternal fight. And Polaris shines brightly in the sky as a beacon to guide the lost souls to rest, and to ensure his brother knows the way home when his task is finally done. [break][break]
And so, this is the story of Sirius and Polaris, the Bright star and the North star, the Sword Star and the Shield Star, the Call of Destiny and the Eternal Promise. [break][break] “So you see, my little ones, that our stars will always watch over you. Sirius will guide you to your fates, and Polaris will guide you home.” [newclass=".questcont"]background: var(--boardbg); color: var(--iconcolor); font-family: 'Jost'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.8; width: 520px; margin: 0 auto; padding: 2em; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box; border:10px solid var(--bannerbgcolor); } .questname { padding:1em; box-shadow:inset 0 0 0 1000px rgba(18, 18, 30, 0.7); background-size:cover; background-position:center; color:white; font-size:20px; text-transform:uppercase; letter-spacing:0.1em; text-align:center } .questh { text-transform: lowercase; font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px; letter-spacing: 0.05em; border-bottom: 10px solid var(--mainbg); height: 22px; margin-bottom: 1em;} .queststats b { color:var(--sybaris); } .questtalk { display: flex;justify-content: center;align-items: center;background-color: var(--boardbg);height:60px;box-sizing:border-box;overflow:hidden; } .questtalk img { width: 60px;padding-right: 1em;opacity: 0.6;} .questtalk span { font-size: 0.9em; padding: 0 1em 0 0; } .questblock { border-left:1px solid var(--thirdbg); padding-left:1.5em; } .queststats { box-sizing:border-box; margin-top:2em; padding:3em; background-color:var(--secondbg); [/newclass]
