ic description: On March 4th, Basil Fade enters the tectonic fracture created by the heir of Pythia, H. P. Penelope Krost. She is perfectly healthy, as sound of mind as any Valencian can be, armed with an array of enchanted items and a knot that she is supposed to pull on if she is ever in danger. When the knot is pulled, when Basil Fade emerges from the tectonic fracture wrapped up in her monowire, she doesn't even know her own name when her best friends calls her by it. There are no witnesses. The only proof that something happened to her at all -- the strange stones, how CYLCH cuts into her flesh and she hardly moves away from the pain, notes and images of a strange high place and the complete absence of sentience.[break][break]

Contact, then, arrives on Julius Kingston's interface from a Sybaris sentinel named Zhiqiang Wu. Though his actual role in the company isn't apparent, he introduces himself to Julius as an employee of INFERNO and provides him with the details of the Yggdrasil Institute. Last year, the story goes, while he was stuck in the wilderness and the city was in lockdown, the team he managed discovered a new species. Two. One of them, a symbiotic wyrm that lived in the brains of seemingly unremarkable deer. But when hunted, the deer showed a surprising intelligence, an impressive ability to evade their hunters.[break][break]

The wyrms, so the man says in a bored voice, as though he had given the pitch a hundred times before, were improving the decision-making processes of the deer. Rounded 'em up, delivered a herd of 'em to the lab -- Yggdrasil Institute, heard of 'em? -- the wyrms've been extracted and the institute had been exploring therapies and treatments possible, breeding the wyrms themselves in a controlled environment.
