The decision had been a no-brainer - inviting her partner to stay in the Vale once they'd both graduated seemed laughable when her partner had been raised in Delphi City. Ever since democracy had arrived in the Vale, it was difficult to ignore how much better a life they could have in Delphi City, even if it meant abandoning her family halfway across Salem. It was hard, at first, leaving behind everyone she'd ever known. Hoping to be embraced by her in-laws to be, it seemed like her fiancée was, as usual, completely uninterested in integrating back into Delphi City in any meaningful sense. No rush to introduce Basil to her family, her childhood friends, to invite her to "tedious" work events... [break][break] Retrospectively, it seemed painfully obvious.[break][break] Seemingly out of the blue, her fiancée told her that she was done with her. That she never wanted to speak to or even see Baz again. Then the restraining orders arrived, the strange calls and messages from withheld numbers, suddenly being let go from work. Baz didn't need to have studied forensics to understand that she wasn't getting the whole picture. With the help of her new coven, Sybaris, it was almost... trivial to find her again, undetected.[break][break] The woman she'd left behind her whole life for? Who worked so late into the nights, who had supposedly done this for her career and providing for their future? Whose parents hated her and caused her to live a quiet, uneventful life with few friends? Had been living a double life the entire time. Smiling at the dinner table with her children, her parents, her wife, it was apparent that this deception had been going on for years. Before they'd even met. All those years, wasted so easily.[break][break] Who knew why they'd chosen to give up their second life now? Who knew why they chose to keep her in the dark? Was it all to try and spare her feelings? [break][break] Basil threw herself into work, honing her enchantments, seeking these uncomfortable truths for herself and for her clients. Already predisposed with her skillset to root out any deception, it was almost tragically comical that she'd fallen for such things herself. But not again. Idolising greater witches than she, Baz swore to herself that she would never fall victim to such deceptions, that she would become skilled enough to create a space where such things were not only unwelcome, but unnecessary. That she would live a life free of simpering misdirection, white lies. Baz knew that exposing truth did not create happiness or ease, and it wasn't even always effective. But Baz wanted to be a tool of truth, and she was going to be strong enough to bear the burden of it. [break][break] If other people were not? That was their flaw. [break][break] An exploitable one. Her parents consider her... a challenging child, critical and direct. She is notoriously difficult to mislead, even in her best interests. When it becomes apparent that the pet was accidentally murdered by one of her siblings in a magical accident, Baz discovers the lengths people will go to to avoid consequences... And takes advantage. [attr="class","chartl-item"]2014 Age 18, Baz starts attending university in the Vale, majoring in forensic science.
