each morning is the returning of himself to a body that is not fully his, but theirs. economists call it a rule of scarcity: the less of something that is available, the more that people want it. then, by converse, the same is true too: the more something is available, the less that people want it. his body is a possession that is too expensive to keep, but that suddenly becomes his when he's gone past the need for himself. he carefully brushes out a doll's hair, scrubs its face until it's clean, dresses it, then has it pantomime through the motions of being human.

SYNOPSIS

a hydra witch, though for all intents and purposes passes himself off as a pegasus witch. the only son of an old mercantile family from the vale that has since immigrated to delphi a few generations back. a graduate of oracle university, and one of the engineers responsible for helping in bringing the cad back online after recent events. spends a truly incredible lack of time in day-to-day rescue operations in favor of conducting research at the yggdrasil institute of his alma mater, purportedly studying something that has to do with familiars. the gap between the truth and what he says is not so different, not so wide: he is a perfectly pleasant individual that is well and concerned about his worthiness, that takes compliments humbly and cares deeply for what he considers valuable. but, there are other things he does not speak of in broad daylight: the orphanages he patrons for forgettable and problematic children to bring to the university for study, the dangers his family's invited by rejecting what'd given them their power for so long, and his own wants to become something greater than he is.

PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE

THE TSUIS an old hydra family that settled in the vale and, in the earliest days following the war, helped evacuate survivors. the direct branch eventually relocated to delphi, where they've been for at least two generations now. the royalists might still call them nouveau riche, though they were at one point considered on the level of merchant princes. the business had long switched hands to a branch family, with his cousin set to be considered the head of the family. though, the tsuis still hold considerable wealth, it is obvious that they're on a decline in power. PHILANTHROPY it is generally pretty well known that xiulan donates to benevolent causes, and speaks out against the ills of society. he's pretty vocally supportive of the democracy in the vale, for what weight his words even have. he also discretely funds several orphanages, it seems, and appears from time to time to take children to new adoptive families that he himself personally seeks out. he does make mistakes on the occasion and backs the wrong horses in certain races, but one has to wonder if that is intentional or if it really is just a mistake. GAMBLER he has a fondness for games of chance, and makes himself present at most places you'd assume he would be for that. he's not very good at card games, but is excellent at anything that involves dice. [break][break]

SERIAL DATER he's in and out of relationships more often than a rotating door turns. it's very rarely serious things, though he has a habit of looking at least the tiniest bits pathetic in love. the kind of a guy who will joke to his friends that their date is the one, or that will keep a wedding ring in his pocket just in case. that's usually sends people running for the hills, though he never really means any harm by it. he's probably dated almost the entirety of his lab staff, the graduate students and then some. nothing ever gets too serious.

HYDRA an obvious one, but it's worth stressing that despite having been historically involved in the coven for decades that the family's recently renounced its association with hydra. publicly, this has been the case for years now with the family even going so far as to paying reparations, though internally this was not true and the family has continued to operate under the cover of this.[break][break]

EXES oh my god, he probably has so many lmfao. he's a serial dater. it's mostly just fun and games and a way to make himself look harmless more or less. he likes doing the ' i'm a perfect boyfriend ' thing only until you start trying to learn too much about him personally or it starts to get annoying. the more superficial a relationship, the longer it lasts! he doesn't mind being used! FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS he's more pleasant when he's busy.[break][break]

PHILANTHROPY it kind of goes with what i mentioned above in that xiulan does donate to orphanages and nonprofits or causes that he thinks are worthwhile. sometimes, it is born of a genuine interest, but more often than not is just mostly done to hide in plain sight. but, if you need someone with deep pockets to finance your charitable cause, he's your guy. or if it's to fund a criminal racket, at least make sure to do it out of sight. he does mostly work through a proxy. YGGDRASIL he works there as a researcher in his day-to-day, so coworkers are inevitable just as are grad students and lab staff that help keep them running. he's recently shifted gears to seeing if there's a way to replicate familiar biology, presumably for the purposes of being able to make ' false ' familiars for those that might've lost theirs after the calling. given the nature of the work, it's mostly hush hush and he asks those in his lab to avoid sharing information with others. what he's actually doing the work for is anyone's guess. SILVER SPOONS eh, he's a rich kid. he definitely floated around in those circles, so he probably is familiar with some of the noble families in delphi on a personal level even if he wouldn't outright consider them friends.
